Dental Medicine

While the location of many oral disease states would allow for ready topical treatment, often the necessary medication is not available in a topical form. However, such medication formats frequently can be provided to the dental medicine professional by a compounding pharmacy.

For example, corticosteroids can be incorporated into a mouth wash for the treatment of canker sores, lichen planus, cicatricial pemphigoid and pemphigus. Further, the pain associated with these conditions can be relieved with the use of a prescription analgesic agent that is compounded with a mucoadhesive agent.

Intraoral pain secondary to neuralgias, chemotherapy, neoplasms, trauma and infection can be treated using prescription analgesic and/or anti-inflammatory agents compounded with pluronic lecithin organogel (PLO) that allow for the ready absorption of the active agent(s) through oral or facial tissues.

Troches containing an anti-fungal agent for the treatment of thrush and alcohol-free microbicidal mouth rinses that are helpful in the management of gingivitis and periodontitis can also be compounded.

Tri-State Compounding Pharmacy can also provide the practitioner with a variety of custom-made prescription medications that can be helpful in the management of a number of dental disease states.
